Doudanuki Masakuni Toku
同田貫正国 どうだぬきまさくに 特 とく
I'm Doudanuki Masakuni. There are those who say I'm ugly, but what exactly do you want from a sword, anyway?
We're weapons, so being strong should be good enough. I'm the only one who managed the helmet cut others couldn't, you know.
In stage plays, I'm traditionally called Doutanuki, but in my birthplace my name is read Doudanuki. Call me however you please.
Doudanuki's smith cared more for the strength of the blade than for how it looked -- the goal was truly battle swords, mass-produced and consumable. Thus, the blade is often thicker on the back or as a whole and exhibits little curvature. Doudanuki blades are often used in Tameshigiri tournaments in Japan, as they are very efficient at cutting through makiwara. They were once highly-prized for their ability to cut through armor.
During the Meiji era, a tameshigiri feat using high-quality helmets was held before the emperor, and a Doudanuki sword was renowned for piercing the armor (see Critical Hit quote for details). However, the Doudanuki was made not by Masakuni, but by Naritsugu. It's a mystery why Doudanuki Masakuni claims this feat.
I am Doudanuki Masakuni. We're weapons, so being strong should be good enough. You know, simple and sturdy, or something?
Touken Ranbu, let the battle begin!
Now then, let's get right to the battlefield.
I'm pretty sick of this era where you can't prove your strength without putting on a show.
The evil ways of the underworld? Who gives a crap, we're here to cut down the enemy, aren't we?
"Evil ways of the underworld" appears to be a reference to Ogami Ittou from the series Lone Wolf and Cub, who wielded a Doudanuki sword, and the quote, "We, my child and I, live in the evil ways of the underworld, and so are not human." (Underworld here refers specifically to the world of the dead.)
Who cares about appearance, anyway... Weapons are all about strength.
Hey now, are you one of those people who mistake katanas for works of art?
This is just a scratch...... Still no word on the next battle?
Line removed as of Feb. 18, 2015
Shaddup. Isn't it fine to sleep at a time like this?
Citadel (Kiwame Sendoff)
He needs time to be re-tempered. Not that it will take that long.
Got it. I just charge right ahead and cut 'em down, yeah?
The captain's gotta order people around, right? Ughhh.....
Yeah! With this I can go wild in the next battle!
'Kay, I'm heading out for a bit.
Expedition Completed (Leader of Expedition Party)
With me on the case, this is a piece of cake.
Expedition Completed (Leader of Primary Party)
Looks like we've got a new one.
Uhh...... This's good enough, right?
Repairs (Minor Injury)
This'll heal right up with a bit of spit.
Repairs (Medium/Severe Injury)
Damn it! It's meaningless if I can't go to battle!!!
Yeah! I'm overflowing with power!
You've put in the effort, so you better pick up the reward, too.
This is your military record. Did you use your swords well?
Shopping? Why would you bring me? I don't know anything besides war, y'know.
Front Lines & Battles
All right! We're off to the front!
The hell... That's not an enemy.
Find me the enemy headquarters. I'll charge once we find 'em!
All right, no matter how tough they are, they won't be a match for me!
Bring it on. I won't be going easy on you just 'cause this is training.
I'm gonna give you a good slashing!
A cut for half's a fatal one!
"Half" here refers to half of 1 sun (equivalent to 3.03 cm), or about 1.50 cm, which was also said to be how deeply the helmet was cut during the imperial inspection Doudanuki's introduction is referencing. Also, if you cut 1.50 cm into somebody's head they'll probably die.
I won't break that easily.
Don't underestimate the toughness of a battle sword!
Damn... But I'm not done yet!
Looks like you've taken me real lightly... Unforgivable!
If I beat you now, it all ends here!
Alright, should I rough things up?
My bad, my bad, did I steal everybody else's spotlight?
Looks like I've gotten stronger and stronger. ... My looks? Why would I change those?
This is a natural outcome on the battlefield... It's fitting for me.

Take care of the horses? What does my master think weapons are for?
... Well, horses have their uses on the battlefield, too.
I'm not a work of art, but I'm not a farmin' tool either!
This is enough, right? I've done my job properly.
If you go in half-assed, it's gonna hurt.
Haha! It's got nothing on a real battle, but it still feels great!
New Year's Greeting
Yaw~n... Ah. ...What? If I have nothing to do then, at least let me laze around for a while.
Touken Ranbu's First Year Anniversary (2016)
First Year Anniversary, huh...... Well, I'm just gonna continue to take down and slash our enemies as usual from now on.
Touken Ranbu's Second Year Anniversary (2017)
Second anniversary? What, are you telling me to cut a helmet as celebratory event?
Welcome Back Greeting (After Long Absence)
Fwaaa~ Hmm? Oh, looks like you're back. That was unexpected. Anyway, hurry up and take me to the battlefield.
Saniwa First Year Anniversary
With this you've been inaugurated for a year. You're now experienced in handling swords, right?
Saniwa Second Year Anniversary
Yo. This is your second anniversary? Well, guess I can't make light of you anymore.
