Expeditions are a safe way for you and your team to gather resources and gain a small amount of experience points. Unlike at the Front Lines, they do not engage in fights or sustain damage.
An expedition unlocks once you have completed a map. However, the previous expeditions leading up to the last map you cleared must also be completed in order to access the new expedition.
To successfully complete an expedition, all expeditions have a specific unit level requirement, which equals the sum of all member's levels. Some expeditions may also require certain sword types to be present in the party in order to succeed. Members who qualify for this requirement are highlighted by toggling the green display button at the confirmation screen. The only way to fail an expedition is to not meet the expedition's requirements, or by performing a forced recall.
Only your auxiliary teams (2nd, 3rd, and 4th) may travel on Expeditions. Below are the missions that must be cleared to access your auxiliary parties:
- 2nd Party: A3 - Have six swords in your first party.
- 3rd Party: B9 - Clear Sortie 2-4.
- 4th Party: C4 - Clear Expedition D4.
While a party is on an Expedition, those swords cannot be used in battles, repaired, have their equipment changed, moved to a different team, upgraded at the Refinery, or dismantled at the Forge.
Expedition Recall Pigeon
Using Expedition Recall Pigeon (遠征呼び戻し鳩) will instantly recall an expedition team to the citadel and completes expedition, but does not guarantee the expedition team's success. Expedition Recall Pigeon can be purchased in the Shop.
Great Successes
When a Great Success occurs, you acquire 1.5 times the normal amount of resources, and 2 times the player experience points. Your swords do not gain any bonus experience for a Great Success.
Great Successes also guarantee Koban boxes (小判箱), Help Tokens, or Request Tokens that are listed in Obtainable Items for an expedition. When the expedition concludes, they will be displayed under "Tools Acquired." Though listed next to resources under Obtainable Items, these items can only be obtained with Great Successes.
The likelihood of obtaining Great Successes is believed to depend on Fatigue levels. The following method has been reported to guarantee Great Success up to two times in a row:
- All participating swords must have a Fatigue value of 100
- You can reach said level by completing 3 runs on map 1-1 with each sword individually (will not work if they have orange or red levels of Fatigue, must be normal).
- After sending them on 2 expeditions and receiving Great Success, you only need to complete 1 run individually in 1-1 to repeat the process
- There is no need to have a full party in each expedition, you only need to meet the conditions

Note: Items listed under "Other" can only be obtained in the case of a Great Success.
