序伝 跛行する行軍
西暦2205年。
歴史改変を目論む「 歴史修正主義者れきししゅうせいしゅぎしゃ」が過去への攻撃を開始した。
対峙する時の政府は歴史の守りとして「 審神者さにわ」なる者を過去へと派遣する。
物の心を 励起れいきする審神者の力によって生み出された、
刀剣に宿りし付喪神「 刀剣男士とうけんだんし」たちは、審神者と共に歴史を守る戦いへと身を投じる。
本丸がまだできて間もない頃。
山姥切国広率いる第一部隊は、主の命により《小田原征伐》の時代を訪れていた。
そこは時間遡行軍の歴史改変対象となる通常の出陣先ではなかったが、
今後、改変対象となり得る時代かどうかを調査するために、山姥切たちは遣わされたのだった。
その調査の地で、いるはずのない時間遡行軍の奇襲に遭う刀剣男士たち。
歴史改変の対象ではない時代になぜ時間遡行軍はいたのか？
負傷した骨喰を連れてうち捨てられた猟師小屋へと身を寄せた刀剣男士たちは、困惑と経験不足によって統率を乱していくこととなる。
見廻りに出た山姥切と山伏は、そこで小田原征伐に参陣していた黒田官兵衛と長政の親子と出会う。
素性を怪しまれた山姥切・山伏・同田貫は、官兵衛によって黒田の陣へと連れて行かれるのであった。
また長谷部・小夜・骨喰は、山中で目撃した時間遡行軍のあとを追跡する。その先にたどり着いたのは、黒田の陣であった。
時間遡行軍はなぜ黒田の陣の近くに姿を現したのか？

本丸ができて幾年月が経ち、数々の戦いを経てきた刀剣男士たちは強く成長した。
山姥切国広をはじめの刀とする本丸にも、今や多くの仲間たちが顕現していた。
ある日、主より出陣の命が下りる。
出陣先は、過去の敗戦から遡行経路の封鎖されていた《小田原征伐》の時代だった。
彼らはそこで、謎の忍びによる襲撃を受ける。
忍びを追跡した先で出会ったのは、黒田長政と家臣・母里友信であった。
刀剣男士たちは、そこで長政の口から驚くべき事実を聞かされることとなる。
長政たちと話をしている最中、時間遡行軍の襲撃を受けた山姥切と山伏は、交戦中にそこにいるはずのない《あるものら》と遭遇する。混乱を極める中、山姥切は過去の出陣で起こった事象と照らし合わせ、自分たちを取り巻く時間軸の流れに異変が起こっていることを予測する。
そして、敗北した因縁の地で過去の己自身と向き合うことを余儀なくされるのであった。
異変の巻き起こる小田原の地で、《過去を乗り越えるための戦い》に挑んでいくこととなる

Prologue: The Arduous March
It’s the year 2205. Scheming to alter the course of history, the “History Revisionists” started attacking the past. Taking a stand against them, the Time Government dispatched “Saniwa” to the past. Touken Danshi (Sword Warriors) are artifact spirits of swords brought to live by the Saniwa’s power to breathe life into objects. Together they plunge into the battles necessary to protect the course of history.
Shortly after the Citadel was established, the first unit, led by Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, travels to the “Siege of Odawara” by order of their master.
However, they aren’t dispatched to subdue the History Retrograde Army. The unit’s job is to investigate what events of this era are likely to be targeted by the History Revisionists.
While out in the field, they are caught off guard by a surprise attack of the History Retrograde Army. What is the History Retrograde Army doing in an era that shows no signs of alteration? Carrying the heavily injured Honebami, they find shelter in an abandoned hunter’s cabin. Due to their confusion about the situation and their lack of experience they start to question their leader, Yamanbagiri.
When Yamanbagiri and Yamabushi head out on patrol, they meet with Kuroda Yoshitaka and his son, Kuroda Nagamasa, who both joined the “Siege of Odawara”. Suspicious of their true identity, Yoshitaka decides to take Yamanbagiri, Yamabushi and Doudanuki with him to the base camp of the Kuroda army. Meanwhile, Hasebe, Sayo and Honebami encounter the History Retrograde Army in the mountains and give chase. Yet at the end of the trail, they only find the Kuroda army’s base camp.
Why did the History Retrograde army venture this close to the Kuroda army camp?

Several years have passed since the founding of the citadel and through countless battles all Touken Danshi have grown stronger. Numerous new comrades have joined Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, who was the first to set foot in the citadel.
One day they receive an order from their master. They are dispatched to the “Siege of Odawara, a historical event that had been sealed since they suffered a defeat sometime in the past. Upon arrival, they are attacked by a mysterious warrior. As they give chase, they stumble upon Kuroda Nagamasa and his vassal, Mori Tomonobu. From the mouth of Nagamasa the Touken Danshi learn a shocking truth.
In the midst of their conversation with Nagamasa, they are attacked by the History Retrograde army and subsequently Yamanbagiri and Yamabushi encounter “a certain person” who isn’t supposed to be there. In the midst of the confusion, Yamanbagiri remembers what happened the last time they were dispatched to this time period and suspects their own time axis went askew.
Now, in this place of defeat, they are forced to face their past selves. As disaster strikes the land around Odawara, they have to challenge themselves to a “battle to overcome the past”.
