相槌を打ったのが狐故、小狐丸と申します。神々への感謝ゆえ、小鍛冶と称し、相槌を打った狐も小狐です。けして、図体が小ではありません

Because my forging was assisted by a fox, I was named Kogitsunemaru. As an offering of gratitude to the Gods, I was bestowed with the names of both Kokaji and the little fox that assisted him. My body isn't small in the least.

Kokaji (小鍛冶/Little blacksmith) is the title of a noh song about Sanjou Munechika receiving assistance from Inari, the Shinto god of fertility, who appeared to him as a fox. With Inari's help, he forged a sword to present to the emperor and named the sword Kogitsunemaru (kogitsune = little fox). Kokaji was also Sanjou's alias. According to the above story, Kogitsunemaru had "Kokaji Munechika" carved on the front and "Kogitsunemaru" on the back.

やはり三条宗近殿は、御剣を打てとの勅命を引き受けるかどうか迷っている様子。
であれば、この稲荷神社で待っていれば三条宗近殿に助言を授けるであろう
稲荷明神の化身に会うこともできましょうなあ。

……と、思うておりましたところ、神社の方からは誰も現れない。
三条宗近殿は思い詰めるばかり。
これはいけませぬ。
矢も盾もたまらず、私は飛び出してしまったのです。

To Master.

As I expected, Sanjou Munechika-dono is hesitating whether to accept the edict to smith the requested venerable blade.
If so, then if I wait at this Inari shrine here I would be able to meet
the incarnation of Inari-myojin, who will bestow advice on Sanjou Munechika-dono.

…is what I had thought, but no one is appearing from the direction of the shrine.
All that Sanjou Munechika is doing is agonize over it.

事はうまく運びましたのでご安心くだされ。

飛び出してしまった私ですが……
三条宗近殿を舞をもって宥め、その悩みに耳を傾けたのです。
暫くすると、何処からか声がいたします。
よくやった。あとは我々が引き受けよう、と。
そして、狐面を被った者たちが現れたのでした。
あれこそが本来の稲荷明神の化身であったのか、
あるいは名を明かせぬ野鍛冶の連中であったのか。
……あるいは……

謎はあれど、何故か私の心は晴れやかです。
毛艶は心を鏡のように映すもの。今や私は過去にないまでにもふもふに。
いち早くぬしさまに披露したく思います。なにとぞお待ちくだされ。

I did end up jumping out, but…
Soothing Sanjou Munechika-dono with a dance, I lent only an ear to his worries.
Before long, I heard a voice call to me from somewhere.
“You did well. We will take over from here,” it said.
And then, people appeared bearing fox masks.
I wonder if that was the actual incarnation of Inari-myojin,
or whether they were field blacksmiths who couldn’t reveal their name.
…Or perhaps…

Though much still remains a mystery, for some reason my heart feels lighter.
My fur’s sheen is like a mirror of my heart. Right now I am fluffier than ever before.
I would like to show it to Master as soon as possible. Please await my return.
