One of the 'Uesugi Clan's 35 Chosen Swords' (上杉家御手選三十五腰), a collection of swords that strike the fancy of Uesugi Kagekatsu.
When the envoy that Ashikaga Yoshimitsu sent to China in the Ming dynasty got attacked by five tigers, he used this tantou to repel them away. The name is bestowed upon the sword upon said envoy gave his report to Yoshimitsu.
It was then presented to the imperial court.
Uesugi Kenshin obtained this sword from Emperor Oogimachi when he received a request from Ashikaga Yoshiteru on 2nd year of Eiroku era (1560 CE)
